“These decisions are hard on teams making the games & our fans. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer took to Twitter to offer support for the delay as well as a helping of contrition.

Fans are, naturally, not happy last year, Microsoft promised it would bring “at least one” first-party game every quarter to Game Pass. Crucially, this leaves Xbox without any significant releases from its internal studios scheduled for 2022. Starfield, in particular, was hotly anticipated, being the first major RPG from the makers of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and Fallout 4 in seven years.īoth have now been pushed to the first half of 2023. They will be the first Bethesda games since the buyout not to be released on PlayStation, and to be added on day one to the Xbox Game Pass library. The two games were given 2022 dates during last year’s summer Xbox showcase, and represent the first real fruits of Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of Bethesda. But this week’s announcement of delays to two Bethesda titles and Xbox console exclusives - Starfield, from Bethesda Game Studios, and Redfall, from Arkane - has hit particularly hard. If there’s a major reason to own an Xbox One Series X, much of the credit will go toward the studios and franchises that the company has invested and fostered.Game delays happen all the time, and they’re always disappointing. It showed that the company understands that technology can only take video games so far. At the showcase, Microsoft’s new studio additions did the heavy lifting. That future looks fairly bright for Xbox. For example, the video for “Stalker 2” was cool but like many of the announcements it gave fans a tease of what’s to come. Hearing that a new “Fable” and “Forza” is on its way was great and seeing a trailer was exciting, but gameplay speaks volumes. It seemed to be a theme with the event and lessened the impact of its bigGER announcements. Although we had a glimpse of this upcoming title, that’s all fans got. With it being Obsidian, I’m sure it will have more humor or a wry twist. The most intriguing reveal though was Obsidian’s “Avowed.” It’s a first-person role-playing game, and it appears to be in the vein of Bethesda’s “Elder Scrolls” series. Microsoft also revealed more about the upcoming third-person action title “Grounded.” It looks like a video game version of “Honey I Shrunk the Kids.” That’s coming soon on July 28.ĭay 1 of Pokemon Go Fest 2022 was bad. There’s no word on a Nintendo Switch release.

The best announcements came from Obsidian - again I’m a huge fan of the studio - and they showed off gameplay for both “ Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgan.” The DLC is thankfully available for PlayStation 4, PC and of course Xbox for a reduced price on Sept. The sequel to the cult classic will have longtime fans hyped.

Double Fine brought “Psychonauts 2” to the table. The developer has polished that formula over each iteration and it seems that the team is doing more with this chapter.įans got more details about Ninja Theory’s sequel to the acclaimed title “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.” “Senua’s Saga: Hellbalde II” will take place in Iceland. It’s essentially a procedurally generated zombie survival game where players build a colony during the zombie apocalypse. Undead Labs’ “State of Decay” has always had an intriguing premise. That’s a way to start a showcase but it’s the next few games that intrigued me more and it showed off why Microsoft’s investments were so important. It seems more stylized rather than realistic. Microsoft kicked off the event with “Halo Infinite.” As expected, it looks good and brings Master Chief on another adventure, this time against Escharum, a new foe. Players got a glimpse of what those acquisitions can do during Thursday’s Xbox Games Showcase. Mostly known for its role-playing games, the Irvine-based studio is renowned and has the pedigree equal to any of the other big-time developer such as Bethesda Game Studios or BioWare. In 2018, it went on a buying spree picking up “Bard’s Tale” maker inXile Entertainment, action game savants Ninja Theory, “State of Decay” developer Undead Labs and the biggest get, Obsidian Entertainment. In 2019, it purchased indie darling Double Fine. Over the past few years, Microsoft has been rapidly expanding its stable of developers and it has also been helping its teams forge new franchises.

Nintendo’s unconventional console has flourished because of a gaming experience that no one else can reproduce. If you want to see that idea in action, look at the success of the Nintendo Switch in a generation when it appears outgunned in terms of hardware. It’s not how many polygons a graphics chip can push out, but instead, it’s what talented developers can do with technology. Technology has come to a point where a console’s specs mean less to success. Fancy graphics and more powerful hardware just won’t do it anymore.
